There are many supported accommodation options available for older people and people with disabilities in the City of Port Phillip that are operated by not for profit community organisations and private operators.
The council does not own or manage supported accommodation facilities. The City of Port Phillip supports the sector by facilitating processes to identify general community needs, advocates on the community's behalf and coordinates planning processes.

Accommodation definitions
Nursing Homes care for people who need 24-hour nursing care either because they are physically incapable or have severe dementia or other behavioural problems. They are also called High Level Care Facilities. You can only live in a nursing home if you have been assessed as eligible by the Commonwealth Aged Care Assessment Services (ACAS) Aged Care Assessment Teams
Hostels care for people who need some help. People in hostels can generally walk or move about on their own. They are also called Low Level Care Facilities. These admissions also require an assessment by the Commonwealth ACAS.
Supported Residential Services (SRS) offer personal and daily living needs in a hostel like environment. SRSs are not Commonwealth subsidised. They are registered under state legislation.

St Vincent's orphanage site
A recent Department of Human Services (DHS) feasibility study has found the St Vincent's orphanage site is suitable for a 72-90 bed high care facility. DHS is currently preparing a case for the state government to secure the site for aged care pursposes.

Housing support workers
The City of Port Phillip's housing information & support workers are available to:
- Provide information if you are facing difficulties regarding where you live
- See you on an outreach visit at your home or at one of the Town Halls or local agencies
- Provide information about housing alternatives such as public, community and private options
- Provide information about supported accommodation and residential care
- Provide practical assistance and support to move
- Offer advice and referral for support services to help you to stay independent
