City of Port Phillip Activitiy Centres Strategy
The City of Port Phillip Activity Centres Strategy, has been prepared in response to the directions within the State Government's Metropolitan Strategy Melbourne 2030: Planning for Sustainable Growth. Within Melbourne 2030, it is identified much of Melbourne's future growth including housing, will be accommodated within activity centres.
What is an Activity Centre?
An activity centre can loosely be described as locations that offer a well-located lifestyle with excellent public transport. In the context of Port Phillip they tend to be, established shopping strips. However, activity centres, are generally much more than just shopping - they contain a mix of residential housing, commercial activities, recreational activities and employment opportunities.
The City of Port Phillip has four Major Activity Centres identified in Melbourne 2030:
- Acland /Fitzroy Streets, St Kilda
- Bay Street, Port Melbourne
- Carlisle Street, Balaclava
- Clarendon Street (South Melbourne Central), South Melbourne
Purpose of the Strategy
The City of Port Phillip Activity Centres Strategy provides a holistic understanding of the complex role and function of activity centres. It further provides an understanding of the contribution they make to creating sustainable communities.
This strategy provides a series of 'Key Strategic Directions', that will be considered in the development of detailed structure planning for Major Activity Centres. It (Activity Centre Strategy:Implementation Plan 2006) provides recommendations regarding:
- Principles for development of Major Activity Centres
- Guidelines for expansion of Major Activity Centres
- The Inner City Entertainment Precincts Taskforce
- Key Strategic Directions for each Major Activity Centre
- 'Bulky goods' retail locations
- Statutory and non-statutory implementation tools
The key directions and recommendations have been drawn from the Activity Centre Review: Future Directions Strategy Paper (January 2006) produced on behalf of the City of Port Phillip.
