Civic Awards mark 10th anniversary of International Volunteers Year

Published 2 December 2011

Last night, the City of Port Phillip marked the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers at Council’s annual Civic Awards ceremony.

The United Nations called for this anniversary to be marked across the planet and Council answered the call by acknowledging residents who have made a positive contribution to the community.

The winners of the 2011 Civic Awards are:

The Citizen of the Year went to Zoe Hogg, for her outstanding contribution to the Port Phillip community over many years in a variety of fields including Earthcare St Kilda, the Y Rowing Club and the Allsorts music group. Zoe was a driving force behind the establishment of the St Kilda Penguin Study Group 25 years ago. She organises and runs many educational tours for children and community groups to the penguin colony and has assisted many university biology and science students through her wealth of knowledge.

The Young People’s Award went to Gio Fitzpatrick who has already dedicated many years to further understanding natural ecosystems and working to protect local species. He has taken practical action, investing considerable time and money into pioneering a program of wildlife protection through local wildlife surveys and installation of nest-boxes.

The Seniors’ Award went to Peter Goad, a long time member of the Save Albert Park group who’s concerns for the park has not just been the removal of the Grand Prix but for maintenance and restoration of the park itself.

The Civic Project of the Year went to the Middle Park History Group, formed by a voluntary group of residents to protect and preserve heritage in the area. The group has involved the wider community and residents in a number of practical projects including raising awareness through public walks, working with businesses and staging photographic exhibitions.

“On behalf of the Council and the residents of Port Phillip I want to congratulate each of the winners. Their contribution has, and will continue to provide significant benefits to the people of our city,” said Mayor Cr Rachel Powning.

“It is important to recognise people who help strengthen and connect our communities, and these annual awards are a great way for Council to show its appreciation.”
